As the Odisha government stepped up its statewide COVID-19 vaccination campaign, residents of Champakana Village under Kailashpur panchayat, Kolnara block Rayagada District fled the village yesterday to escape COVID-19 vaccination.
Dr. G Shailaja of Kolanara Community Health Center confirmed the news, saying that the villagers fled after seeing the health officials who came to vaccinate. She added that despite repeated assurances that the vaccination is harmless and can protect them from COVID-19, the villagers refused to return to the village.
Health officials carrying 100 doses of the vaccine waited several hours in town before leaving, and no one was even vaccinated.
DRDA project manager and vaccination node officer Maheswar Nayak said a few days ago that health officials went to Goudalelibadi village for swab testing. Nayak said that when two people tested positive, tensions erupted and villagers heckled health officials.
This development has worried the district administration. He added that he will take the next step after discussing the matter with relevant officials.
